Solution Rail Limited had been awarded a contract by Rail For London Infrastructure (Elizabeth Line), whose scope of works included the replacement of a damaged large glass panel at the top of a ventilation shaft. The glass panel was part of a high-level glazed canopy surrounding the perimeter of the ventilation shaft which projected out over the pavement and curb of Eastbourne Terrace in Paddington. Steel & Glass Solutions were recommended to us as a specialist contractor experienced both in handling logistically challenging works, plus also had worked previously on Crossrail stations during the construction phase. Having now engaged Steel & Glass Solutions to undertake these works as a specialist subcontractor, our experience of using SGS has been highly positive.

From the initial engagement of SGS to the point at which the site works could commence there was a lengthy period due to the approval timescales within both RFLI and the Local Authority due to the traffic control that need to be implemented for a busy London road, together with the closure of a section of pavement and temporary relocation of a bus stop.

SGS demonstrated a consistently professional approach from the pre-construction planning phase through to completion. Their problem-solving was proactive, well considered, and solution focused. The project required extensive planning as already mentioned due to local council permit and approval processes, but SGS remained patient, understanding, and cooperative throughout this period.

When the works took place, the site was well managed, and the glass replacement was executed seamlessly exactly as planned with ample time to spare. During the closing out of the project, SGS promptly provided all relevant assurance documentation.

The installation was completed efficiently and seamlessly, with ample time to spare, minimising disruption to the surrounding area and ensuring the canopy was safely reinstated to the required standard.
